The PREP method
A four-beat pattern for making a point that lands.
- 01PointState it in one sentence, no windup.
- 02ReasonGive one reason it's true or matters.
- 03ExampleOne concrete example — a person, a number, a moment.
- 04PointRestate the point, slightly reworded.
Example 1
Suggesting your team switch to a new project management tool.
Point. We should move our tracking to Linear next sprint.
Reason. Our current tool is slowing down handoffs between design and engineering.
Example.Last week the redesign shipped two days late because status updates lived in three places.
Point. So switching to Linear will get us back to shipping on time.
Example 2
Telling a friend why you're moving to a smaller city.
Point.I'm moving to Pune next month.
Reason.I want space to focus and a slower rhythm to my week.
Example. The last time I visited, I wrote more in three days than I had in three months here.
Point. So Pune it is — at least for a year.
